The story

MERCEDES-BENZ 220 S CABRIOLET 1958 , 82,000 original km, beautifully preserved The 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet represents one of the highest examples of elegance and refinement of the era, perfectly embodying the luxury and charm of the dolce vita of the 1950s. Produced between 1956 and 1959, the 220 S Cabriolet was derived from the W180 series, known for its advanced engineering and superior comfort. Equipped with a 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine with dual Solex carburetors, it developed 106 hp, ensuring a smooth ride and performance befitting the prestige of the vehicle. The transmission was a four-speed manual with synchronized shifts, while the refined monocoque chassis with independent suspension ensured excellent road holding. The specimen in question was produced in 1958 and sold new by the official Mercedes-Benz importer for Switzerland in Zurich. It was registered in July of the same year in the name of engineer Ballabio in Canton Ticino. Over the years, it has received regular maintenance at the Mercedes-Benz dealership Bescagni and Ferrari in Lugano and, in 1968, after a decade, it had only covered 17,200 km. Imported to Italy in 1984 and registered in Padua, it still retains the original plates from the first Italian registration. In the following twenty years, it had 3 owners, all collectors from the area, including a member of the International Mercedes-Benz Register, who took care of registering the car in the Italian register and obtaining the official badge no. 695, still visible on the front grille. In 2006, the car passed to the last owner, who has kept it with extreme care for over two decades. During this time, the vehicle underwent a conservative restoration, with a new paint job in the original colors and the installation of a beige fabric hood, made with materials conforming to factory specifications. In 2009 it obtained the prestigious ASI Targa Oro homologation. To date, the car has only covered 82,000 km, which explains the exceptional condition of the original factory red leather interiors, as well as the woods of the dashboard and doors and all the details of the cabin, perfectly preserved. The car is accompanied by all original use, maintenance, and service manuals, as well as the parts catalog. Still installed on board is the original Becker Mexico radio, complete with use manuals and factory warranty. A particularly fascinating detail is the original envelope from the Swiss Touring Club, which contains regulations, facilities, fuel cards, and the club's statute, along with the related badge applied to the front grille, all perfectly preserved. This is extraordinary documentation of great historical and collectible interest, which further enhances the vehicle. There is also a large file that collects details and historical information about the vehicle. On the windshield, a sticker was found that testifies to a probable trip to Barcelona in April 1970 for the 5th Formula 2 Grand Prix, imagining this splendid cabriolet cruising the roads of the Côte d'Azur under the spring sun. The chassis, body, and engine numbers all match. The exceptional state of preservation, the two-tone bronze and gold livery combined with burgundy leather interiors, the ASI homologation, the rich historical documentation, and the perfect mechanical condition make this specimen a unique opportunity for the most discerning collectors, who appreciate the value of an extraordinarily preserved and documented vintage car.
