The story
MERCEDES-BENZ 230 SL “PAGODA” – 1965 Original Italian, black plates of first registration – Only 4 owners – ASI Gold Plate and FIVA homologated An extraordinarily rare car, not only for its technical and historical features, but for the uniqueness of its life journey: this Mercedes-Benz 230 SL “Pagoda”, built in 1965, is perhaps the only example in the world to have spent its entire existence in the same city, Bassano del Grappa (VI), with only 4 owners. Documented and fascinating history Registered on February 17, 1965, it still retains the original black plates from Vicenza and the first registration document with a green booklet, authentic historical artifacts that testify to its continuity and integrity. First owner: resident in Bassano del Grappa, kept it for decades. Second owner: a lady from the same city. Third owner (1998): a well-known local collector, who registered it with ASI and initiated a conservative restoration – maintaining originality as much as possible – of the interiors and bodywork (photographically documented on our website). In 2000, the car obtained the prestigious ASI Homologation with Gold Plate, the highest certification for historic vehicles in Italy. In 2002, it was registered with the National Historical Register AAVS, and in 2003 it also received the FIVA Identity Card, necessary for elegance competitions and international gatherings. Finally, in 2006, it passed to the fourth and current owner, still residing in Bassano del Grappa, who has preserved it with great care and passion, carrying out all mandatory biennial inspections and maintenance work, documented with invoices. Original colors and unique configuration The car presents itself in a very rare combination of original factory colors: Body: White (Mercedes Weiß) Interiors: Blue leather Soft-top: Blue soft-top (fabric) This color combination is exceptionally rare and refined, enhancing the elegant and timeless lines designed by Paul Bracq. Technical features Engine: 6-cylinder inline, naturally aspirated Displacement: 2,306 cm³ Power: 150 HP at 5,500 rpm Transmission: 4-speed manual Drive: Rear Brakes: Front disc, rear drums Top speed: about 200 km/h 0-100 km/h: about 9.0 seconds Curb weight: about 1,290 kg The W113 chassis, on which the Pagoda is based, was cutting-edge for its time due to its structural rigidity, independent suspensions, and the concave roof (hence the nickname “Pagoda”), which improved its aerodynamics and passive safety. Exceptional preservation qualities Although showing some minor signs of age, this 230 SL retains extraordinary integrity and originality: Original bodywork Partially preserved interiors Periodically maintained mechanics Complete and continuous documentation Always stored in a garage An authentic, rare, and unique specimen that combines German refinement with the charm of continuous Italian ownership, making it highly desirable for the most discerning collectors.
