The story
A high-performance Spice C2 Buick with 2 victories at Spa Classic 2025 and a podium at Le Mans Classic 2025 Eligible Group C, Dubai GP Revival, Masters Group C & Le Mans Classic Gordon Spice a driver turned constructor of particularly high-performing prototypes Gordon Spice, an accomplished British driver, launched the production of his cars in collaboration with General Motors. His driving career began in the mid-60s, then he turned to developing racing cars, notably creating Tiga before founding Spice Engineering in 1986. In 1985, after a successful season in the C2 category (with five wins in seven races in a Tiga GC84/Spice-Tiga GC85), Gordon Spice secured a contract with General Motors to design chassis intended to receive a Pontiac engine, for the Camel Lights championship (the equivalent of C2 in IMSA). This is how the Spice Pontiac Fiero GTP was born, named after the road model whose prototype took on some features. The Spice quickly found great success in the Lights category in both the United States and Europe, with several customer teams achieving remarkable results. As early as the 1989 season, S & L Racing demonstrated that the 3L version of the Buick V6 Indy Lights engine was significantly superior to the 4-cylinder Pontiac engine. In 1989, their Spice equipped with the Buick V6 engine won the Lights category championship, with Scott Schubot and Linda Ludemann at the wheel, achieving 8 wins and 10 poles. In 1990, the official Spice Engineering team also claimed the title, thanks to driver Tomas Lopez and the Buick engine. Subsequently, Spice Engineering partnered with Acura and Comptech Engineering, winning three more championships between 1991 and 1993. The SPICE SE87L BUICK chassis 003 offered for sale recently shone at Spa Classic and Le Mans Classic The Spice-Buick SE87L-003 now represents an opportunity for an enthusiast looking for a well-prepared, high-performing car, eligible for all major historic events. Engaged in IMSA from 1987 to 1992, it won numerous races with renowned drivers such as John Paul Jr., Jeff Kline, Bill Koll, Skeeter McKitterick, Tom Hessert, Bob Schader … It competed in events at Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, the 24 Hours of Daytona, Road Atlanta, Sebring, Laguna Seca, and Sears Point, notably recording five wins, five second places, and a lap record. Subsequently, this car raced in HSR for several years with drivers such as Shane Lewis, Dorsey Schroeder, Jeff Kline, Roger Mandeville, Gary Pearson, EFR, John Morton, Walt Boren, Ian James, under the ownership of Mark Pritchard. With its current owner, the SE87L-003 has enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic: at Laguna Seca, and more recently in Europe. In 2025, freshly arrived from the USA where it had been prepared by J&L Fabricating, it was entered at Spa Classic where it won two victories in the C2 category, as well as at Le Mans Classic 2025 where it secured a podium in the Sprint race. Numerous opportunities are available for the Spice C2 Buick to race in 2026, particularly in the HSR series in the United States (Monterrey Historic, Daytona Classic…), the Group C Racing series by Peter Auto, the Masters Group C series which will participate in the Grand Prix de France Historique at Castellet, as well as the Le Mans Classic Legend, where the Group C cars will run in grid 7 with more track time than in previous editions. This car, with lower maintenance costs due to its Buick engine, offers great prospects for its next owner.
