The story

The latest creation of Gérard Welter engaged in the 24 Hours of Le Mans A LMP2 Eligible for numerous historic races including Gulf Historic, Masters Endurance Legends, endurance Icons, Legends of Le Mans and Le Mans Classic Legend Gérard Welter contributed to the legend of the 24 Hours of Le Mans by engaging his creations. A passionate craftsman who has written beautiful pages of the great endurance race. Since 1976 (first under the name WM until 1989 then WR from 1990), Gérard Welter has entered 19 cars in 13 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The WR LMP 2008 is the last of this lineage initiated with the WM P76. This ultimate prototype is in the image of all the creations of Gérard Welter: a car designed for Le Mans above all, with innovative aerodynamic solutions. Designer and then director of the Peugeot Style Center, Gérard Welter dedicated his professional career to the Peugeot brand. In 1960, he joined the French manufacturer and took his first steps by designing the rear lights of the 404 and contributing to the convertible and coupe 204. Having become head of style in 1975, he worked on numerous models and became notably the father of the Peugeot 205, his most beautiful creation according to him. A model that helped to revive the brand and remains iconic today. In parallel with his missions at Peugeot, Gérard Welter is passionate about competition and launched his own team, WM (for Welter and Meunier, named after Michel Meunier, his partner). As early as 1969, the group of enthusiasts they gathered around them began working on prototypes but it was not until 1976 that the commitments began at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. WM entered the legend of Le Mans with the WM P88 prototype with a Peugeot engine that reached 405 km/h during the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans. The record for the highest speed recorded during the event, still in effect. In 1995, the WR (named after the structure that replaced WM at the end of 1989) missed the feat. William David signed the pole position on the WR LM94 in 3'46''05. On the sister car, Patrick Gonin took the best lap in the race (3'51''41) during an edition marked by rain and won by McLaren. After a new attempt and the setback of 1996 (with the death of Sébastien Enjolras, a hope of French motorsport, at the wheel of a WR), it was not until 2000 that we saw WR return to Sarthe. In LMP675 then LMP2, the good performances are notable with several second places in category (in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004). In 2007, a new impetus was given. WR got closer to Stéphane and Philippe Salini. The two gentleman driver brothers who dreamed of competing in Le Mans financed the development of a new car: the WR LMP 2008. The genesis of the most accomplished WR: A revolutionary aerodynamics that inspired the AUDI R15 In December 2007, Welter Racing announced the arrival of its new sports prototype for the LMP2 category, intended for championships governed by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). In partnership with the Salini Group, Gérard Welter's team developed an LMP2, equipped with a 3.4-liter V8 Zytek engine and a Ricardo gearbox. Only one chassis was built - #2008-001 - regularly entered in the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A streamlined Formula 1, this is how the prototype born from the workshops of Thorigny could already be qualified at the time. Extremely worked, the shapes of the prototype officially born on 25/06/2007 seem to be the unique result of aerodynamic calculations and not marketing constraints. At the beginning of 2009, when AUDI unveiled the revolutionary R15, it became clear that the designers of the WR Salini were on the right track because the front of the Audi R15 was remarkably similar to that of the WR. However, aesthetics were not neglected, as evidenced by the diamond-shaped headlights. Gérard Welter summarized the philosophy that guided the design of the LMP2: It is a simple and modern car, oriented towards an ecological future, capable of accepting different engine groups. From the beginning, Welter and his men thought about grafting a diesel block into the car (then allowed since 2006 at Le Mans). But this will ultimately not happen. The 540-horsepower Zytek V8 stood out, only a handful of teams used a comparable block in the Le Mans Series. This was the case for Barazi Epsilon and Trading Performance on Zytek 07S/2 or Embassy Racing on WF01 Zytek. WR broke with the tradition that had been the norm until then: that of running with Peugeot engines. In contrast to the old WR models, the line is not drawn from a monocoque body but is much finer, hugging the various mechanical elements. A single-seater with wings to cover the wheels, this is the feeling one gets when looking at this WR from the front. On the
