The story

When Alfa Romeo unveiled the new Giulia, the brand took a remarkable approach. It didn't start with the sensible version and then gradually work its way up to the flagship model. No, Alfa Romeo revealed the Quadrifoglio first. That really says it all. From the very beginning, the new sports saloon was meant to make clear where Alfa Romeo was heading: an engine at the front, power sent to the rear wheels and, above all, an enormous focus on the driver. The 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 produces 510 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, and in this case it sends its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Today, this almost sounds like a formula from another era. Serious performance, rear-wheel drive, three pedals and a gear lever that lets you decide exactly what happens. The later Quadrifoglio models became known with the automatic gearbox, which makes this early manual version particularly appealing. Then there is the rest of the specification. The carbon-ceramic brakes are serious hardware, and behind the steering wheel you'll find fantastic Sparco seats with carbon-fibre trim. You sit low, well supported and exactly as you'd want in a car with this kind of character. The Harman Kardon sound system is present too, although we can easily imagine that you'll regularly simply choose to listen to the V6 instead. The exterior is finished in Rosso Competizione. Combined with the dark five-hole wheels, four exhaust outlets, functional air vents on the bonnet and subtle carbon-fibre details, the Giulia looks muscular without losing its elegant shape. And of course, the famous Quadrifoglio emblems are proudly displayed on the front wings. That four-leaf clover, incidentally, has a history at Alfa Romeo that goes far beyond this Giulia. The Quadrifoglio symbol was already used on Alfa Romeo racing cars in the 1920s and later became a hallmark of the brand's sportiest models. On this Giulia, then, it is much more than just a badge on the front wing. Technically, the Quadrifoglio is equally fascinating. Alfa Romeo used carbon fibre for components such as the roof and bonnet, while weight distribution and chassis development played an important role in the engineering process. You notice it as soon as the road starts to get interesting. The Giulia feels direct, responds quickly to steering inputs and at the same time has an enormous amount of power at its disposal. In the calmer driving modes, it can be surprisingly relaxed and quiet. But turn the DNA selector to Race and its character changes dramatically. The history of this particular example completes the story. The car was delivered new in the Netherlands, has had only two private owners and has covered fewer than 25,000 kilometres. Its most recent owner is also a former Squadra Bianca driver: someone with real experience behind the wheel and a clear affinity for Italian cars and sporty driving. This seems perfectly suited to a car like this. And perhaps that is precisely what makes this Giulia so interesting. Modern sports cars are becoming faster, smarter and ever more technically impressive, but cars with this particular combination are becoming increasingly rare: 510 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, a twin-turbo V6 and a six-speed manual gearbox. No shift paddles deciding for you when the next gear should arrive. You operate the clutch yourself, you shift yourself and you work for the result yourself. This makes this Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio much more than just an exceptionally fast sports saloon. It is a particularly special specification from the Giulia's early years.
