The story
The DTM racing series is one of the most important and exciting series globally, representing the pinnacle of European motorsport. Launched in 1984 as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, it initially attracted privateers under FIA Group A regulations; by the late 1980s, official teams became increasingly dominant, leading DTM to become one of the most popular series in Europe. In 1993, the adoption of FIA Class 1 regulations for touring cars liberalized the rules and introduced a range of technologies that were banned in Formula 1 at the time, including ABS, all-wheel drive, electronic driving aids, and carbon chassis. After a hiatus following the 1996 season, the series returned in 2000 as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, the name it retains today, racing with silhouette prototype race cars based on mass-produced road cars of the era. Thanks to the involvement of Opel, Mercedes-Benz, and Abt Sportsline, the relaunched series enjoyed immediate success. The 2019 season introduced a significant technical change to the series in the form of turbocharged, 4-cylinder, 2-liter engines, in some ways harkening back to the early days of DTM and the 1989 season. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz withdrew from DTM, paving the way for R-Motorsport to run four Aston Martin-branded cars. In less than 100 days, the Aston Martin team managed to field a car thanks to the legendary HWA team affiliated with Mercedes-Benz. The new compliant two-liter engine produced around 650 horsepower, paired with a six-speed semi-automatic transmission, push-rod suspension, and carbon fiber discs. The team also hired two former HWA drivers, Paul di Resta and Daniel Juncadella, to bring valuable DTM experience to the new team. These two experienced drivers were joined by two young talents in the form of Jake Dennis and Ferdinand von Habsburg. At the first race in Hockenheim in May, this new team not only had a completely new car, built with HWA's know-how, but also a driver lineup with depth, experience, and youth.
