BMW 327/28 Cabriolet 1938 for sale

This BMW 327/28 Cabriolet was produced in 1938 at the BMW plant in Eisenach with the 80 bhp engine of the BMW 328 and then arrived in Sweden in 1939. An archive listing that is present - presumably from a Swedish BMW club - for this vehicle lists all the car's owners with registration and date up to 1965. Thus, the car remained with its first owner in Stockholm until 1950. Subsequently, further owners in Sweden are recorded until the 327/28 emigrated to Norway with its owner in 1965. Later, the BMW returned to Germany and a few years ago received a complete restoration by a well-known specialist for BMW 327 and 328. On that occasion, the car was disassembled into its components and returned to an as-new condition. The body is in excellent condition. The same applies to all the add-on components and the chrome trim. The roof, including its mechanism, conveys an impression of newness. The new paintwork in a contemporary colour scheme of black and dark red is of high quality and looks sporty and elegant. The interior, including the seats, dashboard and instruments, as well as the carpets and trim, has been completely renewed or restored. The black leather seats feature red piping - a particularly beautiful and stylish detail. The installed engine is a unit conforming to the type. All add-on components and accessories are consistently fitted. The engine runs wonderfully, responds well to the throttle and has a deep six-cylinder sound. During the work, all the mechanics, suspension, electrics and braking system were overhauled or renewed. The underbody appears in as-new condition, without damage, rust or partial welding. The installed gearbox is fully synchronised for better driveability. The car drives very easily and handles well with fantastic steering geometry. When BMW introduced the type 327 in 1937, the marque had already earned an excellent reputation for technically advanced and sporty automobiles. With the BMW 327, the Munich engineers succeeded in combining sporting technology with a particularly elegant body. At the time, the Cabriolet was one of the most exclusive German vehicles in its class and is still today considered one of the most beautiful BMW models of the pre-war period. The technical basis was formed by the chassis of the BMW 326, shortened and slightly lowered for the 327. The bodies were produced at Ambi-Budd in Berlin and drew on the modern design ideas of the late 1930s. Particularly striking are the long bonnet, the curved wings, the split windscreen and the spare wheel elegantly integrated into the rear. The body was built using a mixed construction method common at the time, with a wooden frame and sheet-metal cladding, which combined high stability with an attractive form. Although the BMW 327 already impressed with its appearance, a more powerful engine was desired than the 2-litre unit offered until then with 55 bhp. Therefore, the version offered from autumn 1938 under the designation 327/28 received the proven inline six-cylinder engine of the successful BMW 328 Sportwagen.
