The story
The BMW 340 is considered one of the first post-war developments in the automobile in Germany. The rare type 340-0 has its origins in Eisenach, at the foot of the historic Wartburg in Thuringia. One of the last vehicles has recently been carefully restored by Oldtimerrestauration Klinke in Verl. One of only three existing vehicles of this type. This BMW 340 restored by Oldtimerrestauration Klinke is from 1950 and belongs to the rare Zero series, which at the time was still released as BMW and not as EMW. Compared to its successor, it features some modifications and peculiarities. The small but decisive differences between the BMW 340-0 and the subsequent EMW 340-2 were very important during the restoration, as they allowed for clear identification of the types. Externally, the front and rear fenders provided a visible indication, with the full coverage of the rear wheels being particularly evident. The BMW 340-0 was also recognizable by its split and liftable windshield. Oldtimerrestauration Klinke received the vehicle in very degraded condition. From 2015 to 2020, the vehicle was completely restored in Verl, with interruptions. The small but subtle differences between the BMW and the EMW did not make things easier. Extensive research was necessary and, as it turned out, there are only three vehicles of this type in the world. Fortunately, every two years a meeting of BMW/EMW 340 is held, where important information can be obtained. Thus, it was also learned of a dealer in Eberswalde who still had parts of this post-war car. Additionally, old photos also helped in the restoration; it emerged that as early as 2002 an old BMW 340 was in the workshop of senior Edmund Klinke. Besides the bodywork, the engine also had to be completely overhauled. Subsequently, the BMW 340-0 received its original two-tone paint, indicating that the car was intended for export. According to conservative estimates, there are still about 120-150 vehicles of the EMW model. Of the BMW 340-0 type, there are only three cars, two restored and one unrestored model. The vehicle can be viewed at any time by appointment, in order to ensure that the car is in the correct position. The vehicle is sold on behalf of the customer.
