Harley Earl, a passionate designer who joined CHEVROLET in 1927, convinces management to quickly propose an affordable 2-seater sports car to respond to this new enthusiasm. Developed in secret as early as 1953 under the codename Project O in a former truck factory in Michigan, the Corvette is built from plastic due to the lack of steel available during this period of scarcity. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show six months earlier, the Corvette C1, also known as "solid-axle," will in fact be the first mass-produced car to feature a fiberglass body. Despite a rushed tuning and very average build quality, the Corvette will quickly improve to become a benchmark in the popular sports car segment. Body / Exterior: The model presented here is a CHEVROLET Corvette C1 from January 1954 in its period "Polo White" color. The paint is in new condition and shows excellent brightness and depth. It has been recently restored. On this occasion, the body was disassembled to receive a complete new paint job. After a professional polishing performed with orbital polishers from our workshop, we found a small scratch on the bottom of the left front fender. The beige mohair soft top is in good condition and shows no discoloration, we found some small stains. The opening is easy, however, the closing remains improvable. The PVC mica of the rear window is in perfect condition. The chrome headlight grills are in excellent condition. The chrome bumpers are perfectly aligned and also in excellent condition. The chrome ornamental elements and accessories are complete and in excellent condition. The 4 original 15'' steel wheels are in very good condition, with no signs of dents, deformations, or oxidation. These are equipped with their original stainless steel hubcaps, also in excellent condition. This specimen is equipped with 4 GOODYEAR tires with "White" sidewalls that show 30% wear both front and rear. This specimen has retained its original spare wheel. Among the interesting Body / Exterior equipment and options present on this model, we found: The recent paint and the 4 tires with "White" sidewalls. Interior: The interior has retained its strict original configuration and appears in excellent presentation condition. The "Red" imitation leather upholstery is in excellent condition, with no signs of wear, tears, or discoloration. The matching "Red" imitation leather interior doors are also in excellent condition. The "Polo White" dashboard and its "Red" body color visor are in good condition. The entire instrument panel is fully functional except for the original clock and tachometer. The dashboard lighting and vintage ventilation remain out of service. The original "White" bakelite steering wheel shows slight patina. The "White" bakelite gear shift is in good condition. The original radio is no longer functional but has been kept for aesthetic reasons. The "Red" carpets are in good condition, we found some stains on the center carpet. The stainless steel door sills are in good condition. Among the interesting interior options and equipment that this specimen is equipped with, we found: The "aviation" type seat belts in "Red". Chassis: The lift confirms a sound body and chassis, with no signs of accidents or structural corrosion.
