It has been continuously produced since 1953 as a division of Chevrolet and General Motors. Eight iterations have been built, the beautiful song titled 'Corvette', derived from a small and agile warship 'corvette', is anything but a lullaby, it simply keeps going on. In 2020, the eighth Corvette, the C8, hit the market and it is extraordinary, in fact, it could only be accurately described using superlatives. The ninth Corvette, the C9, has already been unveiled and will be available for sale in 2028. After World War II, General Motors held mobile auto shows called 'GM Motorama'. They traveled across the United States to the largest American cities, showcasing their latest designs, being prototypes. Based on public reaction, they would decide whether to proceed with the production of the car(s) shown or not. In 1952, the same thing happened with a prototype of the brave Corvette, 'brave' is a euphemism, the American automotive market had a void when it came to sports cars, as sports car concepts previously only came from Europe and were produced by major European automakers. The Corvette seemed to aim to venture into uncharted territories and make a name for itself there. Americans were excited, and production began in the summer of 1953. Only 300 Corvettes rolled off the assembly line in the first year of production, yet they kept believing, and production continued, never stopping since then. The Corvette is the flagship model of Chevrolet and General Motors, and it is always equipped with the most modern and innovative technology. Exploring uncharted territories, as mentioned before, clearly does not bore the Corvette, it is its goal. C1 The Corvette was rushed to market by Chevrolet in response to the enormous enthusiasm during the GM Motorama. 'Haste makes waste' is what General Motors learned at its own expense at the time as the Corvette did not meet people's expectations, it was also too expensive. When Ford's Thunderbird entered the 'battlefield', things escalated further. However, the Corvette held its ground, and after some trial and error, the C1 managed to evolve into an icon. In 1953, only about three hundred C1s were produced. Despite the innovative use of fiberglass, which was the body material of the C1, the expected success did not materialize. The inline six-cylinder engine, which was equipped with a two-speed transmission, did not capture the American public. Therefore, in 1955, the decision was made to equip the C1 with a V8 engine, which completely took over in 1956 as production of the inline six-cylinder was discontinued. Changes, both mechanical and aesthetic, occurred with each model year. In 1958, the exterior of the car underwent significant changes to align with the trends of the time: the rear fins on both rear sides were eliminated, and the headlights were doubled, so the C1 featured four headlights instead of two. The C1 was succeeded by the C2 in 1962, which indeed bore a strong resemblance to the later C1 models. What initially seemed to be heading towards a financial failure for General Motors turned into an icon in the automotive world, as it is considered the first post-war American sports car that surpassed the European sports cars that had conquered the American roads.
