The Edwards America was born from the desire to build a European-style sports car with American components and ingenuity. The father and creator of the Edwards was Sterling Edwards, a successful industrialist and driver from the West Coast, who became passionate about the idea of building an American GT. Edwards had already built his own race cars and could channel this experience into the development of the Edwards America. The construction of the car was entrusted to Phil Remington, who later became known as the creator of the Ford GT-40. The Edwards America was hand-built in San Francisco and combined European stylistic influences, such as those of the Italian Cisitalia, with proven American components. The choice of engine fell on the Lincoln 317 V8, which had brought Lincoln to the top spots in the Pan American Road Race in 1952, 1953, and 1954. The 205 hp engine was paired with an automatic transmission, and everything was mounted on a Mercury chassis. To reduce costs, the body was made entirely of fiberglass. Despite cost-cutting measures through the use of parts from other vehicles, production costs ultimately became immensely high. The selling price of the vehicles thus rose to over $8,000. But even so, Edwards still lost money. High costs and poor timing to compete with Chevrolet's new Corvette left him no choice but to bury the project. After only five cars were built, production ceased entirely in 1954. This displayed vehicle is believed to be the second of the five Edwards America built. Over the last 61 years, it has had only five owners and has been displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles in the meantime.
