The base of the vehicle was the Ferrari 550 Maranello, whose elegant lines and V12 concept already strongly recalled the classic Ferrari Grand Tourers. Unlike the closed 550 Maranello, the 550 Barchetta received an open body in the traditional "Barchetta" style. Ferrari and Pininfarina consciously chose a purist concept with a soft top designed only as protection from the elements. This was not designed for high speeds and emphasized the character of the vehicle as an uncompromising open Gran Turismo. To compensate for the lack of a roof structure, the chassis was further reinforced and equipped with distinctive roll bars behind the seats. Despite these measures, the weight remained almost at the level of the 550 Maranello. The 550 Barchetta was powered by Ferrari's naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V12 engine with 48 valves, delivering 485 hp at 7,000 rpm. The engine featured numerous technical solutions from Ferrari's Formula 1 programs, including variable intake geometry and electronic throttle control. The transmission was via a six-speed manual gearbox configured in Transaxle at the rear wheels. The combination of a naturally aspirated twelve-cylinder engine, a classic manual transmission, and an open cockpit made the 550 Barchetta a modern classic shortly after its presentation. Aesthetically, the 550 Barchetta also differed in several details from the 550 Maranello. Characteristic were the more inclined windshield, the special roll bars, the custom alloy wheels, and numerous model-specific details inside. Many vehicles received carbon applications, sports seats with the Cavallino logo, and a numbered plaque on the center tunnel. Ferrari equipped the Barchetta with a wide range of comfort features, including air conditioning, electric windows, and an audio system, making the car suitable for long journeys despite its uncompromising appearance. The production of the Ferrari 550 Barchetta was strictly limited. A total of only 448 units were made, each individually numbered and bearing the signature of Sergio Pininfarina.
