The story
Model history: The Ferrari BB 512i (Berlinetta Boxer 512 Injection) is a significant milestone in Ferrari's history. Introduced in 1981, it represents the ultimate evolution of the BB range, launched in 1973 with the 365 GT4 BB. This revolutionary model embodies Ferrari's shift to a rear mid-engine architecture for its GTs, inspired by the brand's racing successes. Like its predecessors, the BB 512i features a sculptural design by Pininfarina. The low lines, retractable headlights, and wide side air intake testify to its distinctly sporty character. The aggressive and elegant proportions contribute to making the BB a true icon of 1970s and 1980s style. The main innovation of the BB 512i lies in the introduction of Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, replacing the carburetors of previous models. This flat-12 engine of 5 liters develops 340 horsepower, offering remarkable performance with a top speed approaching 280 km/h. The injection also improves reliability and reduces emissions, meeting the new standards of the time. The BB 512i marks the end of the Berlinetta Boxer series. Ferrari produced about 1,007 units between 1981 and 1984. It would be replaced by the Ferrari Testarossa, but it will remain in memory as one of the purest and most iconic GTs of its time. Today, the BB 512i is a sought-after piece by collectors, appreciated for its rarity, timeless design, and its role in the evolution of rear mid-engine Ferraris.
