The story

A convertible for four. A V8 up front. An electric roof, power steering, a Pony interior and a Rally-Pac mounted on the steering column. What more could you ask for? The Ford Mustang was introduced in April 1964 at the New York World's Fair and immediately created a rush at Ford dealerships. The company expected to sell around 100,000 cars in the first year. That number was reached in four months. Ford had clearly done something very right. The Mustang combined sporty styling with a price that remained affordable to a wide range of American buyers. Better still, almost every customer could configure a version to suit their taste. A simple six-cylinder coupé for everyday use, a fastback with sportier ambitions, or a luxurious convertible with a V8 and almost everything the options list had to offer. Like this one. This particular example dates from 1966 and has been carefully restored and rebuilt. The body presents beautifully, the paintwork is of a high standard and the wheels suit the car's character exceptionally well. The colour is Springtime Yellow, which in our view is a perfect match for the Mustang's open-air nature. The black Pony interior provides a striking contrast and is also in particularly attractive condition. The Pony interior was about much more than simply different upholstery. Its distinctive seats, revised door panels and more elaborate trim gave the Mustang a far more special atmosphere inside. Of course, standard seats could also be ordered, but why would you? Under the bonnet is the familiar 289 cubic-inch V8. Not a complicated powertrain, nor an engine that requires a lengthy explanation before you understand what it does. Turn the key, the V8 fires up and the car immediately sounds exactly as a Mustang should. The power steering makes the car pleasant to drive, while the electric roof adds convenience. Lower the roof, put the selector in Drive and set off with four people on board. This is exactly what this car does best. And then there is the Rally-Pac. A tachometer and a clock mounted together on the steering column. A stylish accessory, but certainly not a cheap addition at the time. It sits directly in the driver's line of sight and gives the dashboard that extra touch of sporting character that a V8 Mustang wears so well. The Mustang became such a success because it could be something different for almost everyone. A sports car, a luxury coupé, a family car or a leisure car. This 1966 Convertible clearly chooses the latter role. An exceptionally well-restored Ford Mustang 289 V8 Convertible, finished in Springtime Yellow with a black Pony interior and fitted with power steering, an electric roof and the desirable Rally-Pac.
