Presentation video: Click here LaSalle was a car brand produced and marketed by GM's Cadillac division from 1927 to 1940. Alfred P. Sloan developed the concept for LaSalle and other General Motors brands to fill perceived price gaps in General Motors' product portfolio. Sloan created LaSalle as a companion brand for Cadillac. LaSalle automobiles were produced by Cadillac but were priced lower than Cadillac-branded cars and were marketed as the second most prestigious brand in General Motors' portfolio. Under the companion brand strategy, the gap between Chevrolet and Oakland would be filled by a new brand called Pontiac, a quality six-cylinder car designed to be sold at the price of a four-cylinder. The large gap between Oldsmobile and Buick would be filled by two companion brands: Oldsmobile received the high-end V8 engine Viking and Buick received the more compact six-cylinder Marquette. Cadillac, which had seen its base prices soar during the roaring twenties, received LaSalle as a companion brand to fill the gap that existed between it and Buick. Built by Cadillac to its high standards, LaSalle soon emerged as an innovative automobile. Earl was then tasked with overseeing the design of all General Motors vehicles. Later, the Great Depression, combined with declining LaSalle sales, led Cadillac to reconsider its companion brand. Both Buick and Oldsmobile had eliminated the Marquette and the Viking in 1930, their second year of production. Cadillac also saw sales of its cars lose ground as confirmed Cadillac buyers sought to save money by buying the less expensive LaSalle. LaSalle sales were also declining, dropping from a high of 22,691 models in 1929 to a low of 3,290 in 1932. The last LaSalles of 1940 were introduced in October 1939 with, as in its first year, a full range of semi-custom body styles, including a convertible sedan. Harley Earl also oversaw this redesign. LaSalle emerged with a fluid design, its characteristic thin radiator flanked by a series of thin chrome slits, giving it a futuristic look.
