The story
The Lotus Elan was one of the defining sports cars of the 1960s. The engine was the legendary Lotus Twin Cam, an engine that would define the brand for decades. Based on Ford's 1558 cc Kent block, Lotus equipped it with an aluminum cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts, designed by Harry Mundy. In the early road versions, the engine produced 105 hp, later rising to 115 and even 126 hp in the SE and Sprint versions. With such low weight, the Elan was extremely fast for its time, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in under 7 seconds and a top speed of 193 km/h. Even more important was the smooth, flexible, and responsive power, perfectly tuned to the car's light and agile character. On the road, the Lotus Elan was simply revolutionary. It steered like no other car of its era: light, nimble, and lively in the driver's hands. Even modern drivers, used to much more powerful cars, find the stability and fluidity of the Elan astonishing. Chapman's obsession with weight reduction was evident in every aspect of the design. The car's doors were so light they could be lifted with a finger, and even the seats and interior were kept to a minimum. This Lotus presented here is a true race car and was developed for the SCCA class. The Lotus is built to the 26R specification. It features a roll cage, a racing fuel tank, dual fuel pumps, and a twin-cam engine that in this case produces around 190 hp. This has been combined with very stiff handling. This power in a super-light car of about 600 kg makes the car lightning fast. The Lotus has already proven its worth on the track, where the previous driver has already triumphed and was known in the Dutch classics class. An almost authentic 26R at a very competitive price.
