The story
For sale: Maserati Ghibli 5000 SS engine 4.9L from 1970 - one of the rare French originals. Model history: The first generation Maserati Ghibli (1966-1973) is now among the most sought-after Italian GTs by collectors. In fact, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and produced in limited series, it stands out for its iconic design, high performance, and sophisticated mechanics. In total, Maserati built 1,170 coupes and 125 Spyders, making it a particularly rare model on the market. Furthermore, among the various versions offered, the Maserati Ghibli SS 5000 (4.9 L) holds a special place. Produced in only 425 coupe units, it represents the most advanced evolution of the model. Its 4,930 cm³ V8, fed by four Weber carburetors and equipped with a double overhead cam architecture, develops 335 hp. Thus, it offers high torque, ideal for both smooth and powerful driving. Additionally, one of the main technical advantages of the Ghibli SS lies in its dry sump lubrication system. This solution, generally reserved for high-level mechanics, ensures optimal reliability at high revs. It also improves cooling and allows for a particularly low hood, a signature of Ghibli style. Paired with a 5-speed ZF manual transmission, a rigid tubular chassis, and ventilated disc brakes, this combination gives the car remarkable dynamic behavior. Thus, with a top speed close to 280 km/h, the Ghibli 4.9 L stands out as one of the most performing GTs of the late '60s. Its rarity, timeless aesthetics, and the quality of its mechanics make it a particularly sought-after model. Finally, for enthusiasts, the Maserati Ghibli 4.9 L represents the perfect alliance of exclusivity, performance, and technical refinement. It remains a fundamental piece in any collection dedicated to European GTs. History of this Maserati Ghibli 4.9L SS: Delivered new in August 1970 from the Thépenier factories, this Maserati Ghibli was ordered in Polo White with a black interior. Initially, its owner, Monsieur Bouabdalla, kept it until 1975. Subsequently, it changed hands before being acquired in 1977 by its third and final owner. Thus, it is a true third-hand car, a particularly sought-after element on an already rare model. Later, a mechanical enthusiast and experienced collector, this owner decided in 1997 to have it repainted in Ruby Red. He was inspired by the Ghibli driven by Maurice Ronet in La Piscine. This shade, both elegant and typically Maserati, today reinforces its visual presence while remaining consistent with its spirit. Over the years, the car accompanied its owner in his travels. First in the United States, then in the United Kingdom, before returning to Paris about ten years ago. Throughout this period, it has been carefully maintained by its owner and used judiciously. Thus, it benefits from constant monitoring, carried out by an enthusiast keen on preserving its authenticity. Bodywork: Repainted in 1997 in Ruby Red, this Ghibli retains the sculptural appearance envisioned by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Carrozzeria Ghia, its original coachbuilder. It now presents a deep brilliance, particularly precise panel adjustments, and a notably healthy structure, a sign of a car that has been respected and perfectly preserved over the decades. Upholstery: Its upholstery is 99% original. The carpets and headliner show remarkable condition, with no sagging or fading. The leather has a homogeneous and very healthy patina, rare for a Ghibli of this era. Only a part of the driver's seat has been redone a few years ago, for conservation reasons, perfectly matching the original shade and grain. Such a high level of preservation remains exceptional, revealing a car that has been cared for, respected, and protected throughout its life. Engine: Equipped with its original V8 engine, this Maserati Ghibli will need a complete overhaul in our workshops. Every component, from the dry sump to the Weber carburetors, has been checked and maintained. To ensure performance faithful to the authenticity of this classic V8. Transmission: This Maserati Ghibli is equipped with its original 5-speed ZF transmission, perfectly functional. Gear shifts are smooth and precise, offering total control of the V8 engine and a driving experience faithful to the Gran Turismo spirit of the Ghibli. The transmission, carefully maintained, ensures perfect synergy with the engine. This guarantees progressive acceleration and a driving experience that is both dynamic and comfortable over all distances. Rolling trains: The front and rear suspension are stable, with excellent road holding. The chassis behavior is good. No play or noise detected. Braking is good and straight.
