The story
This Mercedes Benz 170 V Roadster was first registered in Germany in July 1938. Its subsequent German owner in Hamburg (known name), who also had a residence in California, had the car restored in the early 1980s, in which approximately 25,000 DM were invested, a considerable sum for the preservation of an "old" vehicle at the time. In January 1986, this car participated with its then owner, in collaboration with Mercedes Benz of North America and the Mercedes Benz Club of America, in the parade for the 100th anniversary of the automobile in Los Angeles, California. A subsequent (last) owner, who owned this car until 2020, continued to invest in the restoration of the car over the years in various stages. This includes extensive bodywork and painting (2001/2002), upholstery work in the interior (2002), and an engine overhaul (2006). Invoices are available and amount to approximately 65,000 EUR. In 2020, further restoration work was carried out on the body. Invoices for this, totaling approximately 15,000 EUR, are also available. The engine is not identical to the factory number of the first delivery, but it is a model compliant with this type. Overall, this compact car with its older restoration, which is very well preserved, makes a convincing impression. It is also a rare rarity, as only 271 examples of the Roadster version were produced. ◀ The Mercedes Benz 170 V (W136 series) was presented in 1936 as the successor to the 170 (W15) at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition in Berlin (IAMA). The development goal of the 170 V was to offer a more economical and even more modern mid-class car compared to the 170. The propulsion was now provided by a simpler 1.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine, with 38 hp. The "V" in the designation stood for the front-mounted engine to distinguish it from the corresponding rear-engine type, the 170 H, and to differentiate it from the predecessor 170 with a six-cylinder engine. The engine proved to be very reliable and impressed with its operating culture. The chassis of the 170 V was a new oval tube frame in an X-shape, which was lighter and at the same time more robust than the box frame used until then. In addition to the numerous sedans produced with two and four doors, vans, and the bare chassis for special bodies, there were also the open versions Cabrio-Limousine, Cabriolet A (two-seater) and B (four-seater), and the Roadster. The Cabriolet A and the Roadster looked similar at first glance. In the Roadster, the sloping rear was slightly longer and allowed for two additional foldable emergency seats - the so-called "mother-in-law seat," which also served as a luggage compartment. In the Cabriolet, the roof in the open position rested as usual on the body. The Roadster, on the other hand, featured a refined roof construction that completely sunk the roof into the body (behind the seats). This creates an elegant side line without the annoying "roof hump." Additionally, the windshield can be lowered for a particularly sporty character and the ultimate feeling of open-air driving. The body of the Roadster was made at the Daimler-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. The Roadster was by far the most exclusive variant of the 170 V, with only 271 units produced between 1936 and 1942. ◀ This Mercedes Benz 170 V Roadster was first registered in Germany in July 1938.
