It was meant to fill the gap in the luxury segment of Mercedes for twenty-four years. The car was launched in 1931 and was built in three versions, a sedan, a convertible, and a diesel version, which was innovative for consumer cars. Production ended in 1955 and the successor was already in place, the W120 and W121. In 1931, the first model 170, called W15, was introduced. It was a luxury passenger car equipped with hydraulic brakes, which was a novelty at the time. In 1934, the second model of this 170 series was released. It had a more rounded design, without being aerodynamic as this was not yet a concept. The typical look of the early 1930s was abandoned. In 1937, the W136 was presented at the Berlin Motor Show. The W136 is the 170 model that will be in production for the longest period and will provide the most variants of the 170 model. The difference from the previous version was the power, the transmission which now had four gears, and the rigid rear axle was replaced by independent suspension. The W136 was equipped with a 1.7L or 1.8L four-cylinder engine with side valves that produced 38 hp. Over the years, eight variants were designed, including a variant with a diesel engine. This is remarkable as passenger cars at that time were only powered by gasoline. A convertible was also brought to market. Production ended in 1955 and about 230,000 W136 models were made in total. It can be considered the predecessor of the E-Class as we know it today.
