The story
MERCEDES-BENZ 220S W180 PONTON COUPE 1957 MERCEDES 220 S (W180) coupé Ponton 1957 6 cylinders 4-speed synchronized gearbox Original sunroof Air conditioning Very nice example of the Mercedes 220 S Ponton coupe, a model rarer than the convertible as only 1231 units were produced between 1956 and 1969. With the particularity of having been hand-assembled, like at Rolls Royce. The great luxury for the time is evidenced by the thickness of the doors, the variety of chrome, the woodwork, the leather, and simply the look. This example is none other than the official car of a German ambassador who kept it close to him during his various missions in the United States and then in Japan, where it underwent restoration work. Returned to France 4 years ago, it will have two owners in the hexagon, including the current one. On the body side, the car is very well presented. The paint was redone a few years ago and the whole is of good quality. The alignments are satisfactory. The seals are also in good condition and have been recently replaced. The chrome is shiny and well preserved. The rims are equipped with chrome hubcaps in very good condition. A rarity on this car: its original Webasto sunroof! An option in the period catalog. The undercarriage and floor have just received a complete treatment, the expertise having highlighted some points of superficial oxidation, quite logical given the age of the car. The work has therefore been carried out according to the expert's recommendations. On the engine side, it is equipped with a 6-cylinder inline engine fed by two double-barrel Solex carburetors. These have been completely disassembled and recently serviced. The current owner maintains it as it should and the expertise revealed normal operation without noise or vibration. A fan motor has been installed. It is equipped with a 4-speed synchronized gearbox, which is quite rare on cars of that era. No slippage was noticed during the road test by the expert. The brake hoses have been recently replaced and a voluntary technical inspection allowed us to confirm the proper functioning of the entire system, which is also assisted. Among the recent expenses, we note the replacement of the exhaust line, the rear axle oil seal, and the rear shock absorbers. A kill switch has also been installed. The interior is well presented: front seats and a rear bench in nice leather. The door panels are also in good condition. The woodwork is well preserved. It has that very particular smell of those cars that, despite some renovation work, have retained their soul. It is equipped with a beautifully crafted bakelite steering wheel. Notably rare for the time: air conditioning! An important point for anyone who wants to use it in high heat. Besides the fact that this coupe model is rare on the market due to the low number of units produced, it is also rare due to its specific features: the Webasto sunroof and air conditioning. There are few for sale, especially in this configuration. Attention to lovers of beautiful mechanics that breathe nobility, this car is made for you! Expertise Voluntary technical inspection Visible by appointment.
