The story

This 230 S Universal received a new body in the 1990s, when it was still possible to purchase doors, fenders, and the underbody system from Mercedes. The original invoices are available. Since the remaining original spare parts from the company Karasch have been installed in this vehicle, it will be difficult to undertake a similar restoration adventure in the future. As for the body and interior, great attention has been paid to originality. Regarding technology and propulsion, safety and driving comfort were paramount. Therefore, the car has been equipped with a contemporary and overhauled 280 SE engine (W108) and an automatic transmission, which ensures relaxed driving. The axles have been fitted with disc brakes. The Mercedes 230 S Universal is undoubtedly the most beautiful and rare station wagon sold by Mercedes. It embodies like few other classic cars from the 1960s the spirit of life of its era, with plenty of space and a high utility value - for example, for a classic car experience with the whole family. The "Ponton" models were replaced in 1959 by the six-cylinder models (W111 series) and in 1961 by the four-cylinder models (W110 series) with the "Heckflossen". They were also available as chassis with partial bodies, which were converted by coachbuilders into ambulances, vans, or other special versions. A particularity was the "Universal" station wagons, produced starting in 1965 by the company IMA in Belgium. The station wagon differed from the sedan by a modified rear axle gear ratio, 15-inch wheels, reinforced springs, and a new hydropneumatic compensating spring at the rear axle. As the top version, there was the six-cylinder 230 S Universal, which was assigned to the sedan of the 111 series. With a longer nose, the typical "six-cylinder face" and abundant chrome, it appeared decidedly more representative. The "Universals" were sold in Germany through the Daimler-Benz sales organization from 1966 to 1968. Thus, they were available only for a short period. In total, only 2,754 "Universal" station wagons were produced at IMA.
