The story
The Mercedes-Benz Spezial Roadster models of the 500/540K type were the pinnacle of the range among German automobiles of the 1930s and embodied the art of German coachbuilding in its most refined form. This is probably the most attractive and valuable automotive design ever created in the pre-war era and, even today, it is considered unmatched by experts. The chassis of this Mercedes-Benz 500 K was built, according to the commission certificate, at the end of 1934, and the following year it was fitted with a body as a Spezial Roadster. It was then made available to the well-known Mercedes racing driver Manfred von Brauchitsch as a "works car". We cannot confirm with certainty whether the chassis is actually that of a Spezial Roadster attributed to the driver von Brauchitsch. According to the restorer's statement, this would be the original chassis with the previously described identity of the "von Brauchitsch" example. We have a corresponding letter from him. In the 1990s, the vehicle was purchased by a German restoration specialist in the United States with a body that was no longer original, but modified. For a German customer, the vehicle was then rebuilt as a "typical" Spezial Roadster according to the original specifications. The body and all the details were made with the utmost craftsmanship over several thousand hours of work, in an elaborate and unique manner. The colour scheme in classic red with white leather interior gives it a sophisticated and elegant look and a touch of Hollywood glamour. Many details can be continually rediscovered. For example, the instruments set in mother-of-pearl, the ashtray on the dashboard or the chrome decorations, which often serve a function in a playful way. The "new" body was completed in 2001 with a high degree of perfection on the rolling chassis. The final completion of the entire vehicle took place at a renowned Mercedes Kompressor specialist in Germany, who also overhauled the mechanicals (transmission, steering, axles). The creation of the body is documented with numerous photos, and a list of the work carried out is available for the car's final completion. The engine is an original unit from the 500 K series, but without a proper match to the original chassis. The chemical composition of the chassis steel also corresponds qualitatively and quantitatively to the chassis steels used by Daimler Benz for the Kompressor vehicles of the 1930s. The geometric dimensions of the chassis also correspond to the original specifications. The front and rear axles are also original components of a 500 K type (W29 series). The original commissioner of the restoration owned the car until 2010. Then, the Spezial Roadster was sold to a Mercedes enthusiast in the Hamburg area, who has owned the car for 16 years along with other high-level classic Mercedes. The vehicle is fully functional and has been continuously registered since its completion in 2002, since 2010 with an H registration, and has also received a permanent TÜV inspection. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire a high-quality Spezial Roadster body in excellent condition with original technical components (Rolling Chassis). And at a relatively attractive price: this first-class, ready-to-use car costs only a fraction of an original Spezial Roadster. The admiration and recognition for such a unique form are, in any case, priceless! With the performance of the 380 model (
