Introduced as a concept under the name SLS E Cell and later offered in small series from 2013, it showcased how far the brand wanted to go at that time in terms of high-performance electric mobility. Aesthetically, the basic shape of the SLS remained, but underneath the bodywork, almost everything was new. Instead of a V8, four water-cooled synchronous electric motors worked, one for each wheel. This arrangement allowed for true electric all-wheel drive with very rapid control of the traction moments for each wheel, known as Torque Vectoring, which significantly increased traction and agility. The system power was already 552 kW / 751 hp in 2013, with maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters available immediately from the first meter. Thus, the SLS AMG Electric Drive accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and was one of the fastest production electric vehicles at the time of its introduction. The top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h. An important component was the lithium-ion battery with about 60 kWh of capacity and 400 volts of system voltage. It was located in a T-shaped housing in the central tunnel and behind the seats to keep the center of gravity low and optimize weight distribution. Mercedes stated, depending on the measurement cycle, a range of about 250 kilometers, although in sporty use it was possible to achieve much less, which suited the character of this vehicle. For the chassis, Mercedes-AMG had to design its own front axle due to the battery and the four motors. A pushrod suspension, as seen in racing, was used to create space and precisely control the additional masses. At the same time, a sophisticated recovery system worked to allow the vehicle to recover energy during braking and lighten the mechanical brakes. The driver could choose from different driving programs and recovery braking levels, allowing the car to be adjusted from rather comfortable to very direct. Inside, the Electric Drive remained close to the known SLS, but with special indicators for performance, state of charge, and recovery. An optional audio system generated an artificial driving sound on demand, to provide the driver with more feedback and make the experience more exciting, as the powertrain otherwise operated almost silently. Particularly impressive was the technical consistency, as the model was not a modified production SLS, but a standalone high-performance electric supercar with special electronics, cooling, and traction control. Production remained very limited, with estimates of fewer than 13 vehicles built, of which fewer than 10 were delivered to private buyers, the rest remaining in Mercedes' ownership, making the SLS AMG Electric Drive an extremely rare collector's item. Looking back, it represents an early phase of electric mobility, where Mercedes-AMG wanted to demonstrate that electric performance does not mean compromise, but opens up new technical possibilities.
