MG B MkI Roadster The steel-dash of 1966. There are cars that require ten minutes of explanation before you can tell someone why they are fun. A MG B doesn’t. Open the door, get in, look over that long hood and turn the key. Roof down, and that’s it. Sometimes driving doesn’t have to be much more complicated than that. And MG understood this surprisingly well in the 1960s. When the MGB arrived in 1962, it succeeded the MGA. Visually, the family resemblance was obvious, but underneath, many things had changed. The MGA still used a separate chassis, while the new MGB featured a monocoque construction. This made the design more modern and also allowed engineers to use the available space more intelligently. Because, although the MGB is not a big car, it is surprisingly comfortable to drive. There was more space for both the driver and passenger compared to its predecessor. Under the hood was the familiar B-Series four-cylinder engine, now with a displacement of 1,798 cc. No exotic engine and no huge power figures. None of that was necessary. The combination of relatively low weight, manual transmission, and that four-cylinder engine provided exactly the kind of driving experience people bought an MG for. In October 1964, the engine received a significant upgrade. The previous three-bearing crankshaft was replaced by a five-main-bearing crankshaft. This example therefore has the later version of the 1.8-liter engine while retaining all the attractive exterior details of the early MGBs. And it is this combination that makes the car interesting. This is a true early series car with chrome bumpers, steel dashboard, and that beautiful steering wheel of the early versions. These are details that changed later during the long production run of the MGB and give an early example an immediately different character. Our example was delivered new in the Netherlands in 1966 and was already equipped at the time with several features you want to see on an MGB: twin SU carburetors, wire wheels, and leather trim. The color certainly helps as well. Old English White with black leather interior and white piping. Very British. This MG has been restored in the past and has been well maintained since.
