The story

We are faced with an object of exceptional charm and history, a car born from the genius and uncompromising experimentation carried out by Renault in the early '80s. The car was born out of the need to homologate a prototype for competitions with technical solutions never seen before: Renault realized the immense potential that a small, light, and dynamic utility vehicle, such as the Renault 5, could have if specifically equipped with measures designed to achieve the best performance on the track, thus the Renault 5 Turbo Maxi was born, equipped with a central engine, widened track, and rear-wheel drive, a small track monster that quickly delivered significant results in Rally and track competitions. In this regard, in the mid-'80s Renault organized a single-make championship specifically dedicated to the Renault 5 Turbo Maxi, which took place on the most famous European circuits in conjunction with Formula 1 races; for this reason, the championship featured stars from the international automotive scene, including rally world champion Jean Ragnotti. The specimen proposed here is one of the cars that participated in this championship, specifically the car originally in Momo livery driven by Massimo Sigala, a promising and winning Italian driver, who participated in the 1984 season finishing in 5th place thanks also to the historic victory obtained at Zandvoort with this chassis. The car, a turbo 1 chassis from late 1983, therefore with lightened doors, fenders, roof, and rear pavilion, was originally delivered by Renault to Garage Ambrosiano (the official Italian preparer for the cars of the French manufacturer that participated in the Renault European Cup), and was prepared for the 1984 season on behalf of Sigala. At the end of its successful racing career in 1985, at Sigala's request, the car was converted for road use by Garage Ambrosiano, which equipped it with Alpine Turbo 2 exterior color and interiors, the evolution of turbo 1 that was in production at that time; from that moment on, the car was registered in the name of Sigala's wife who
