Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Lowlight 1959 for sale

"Housewives' Porsche" or "Secretaries' Ferrari" - the VW Karmann Ghia has had to live with some ironic and funny nicknames since its introduction in 1955. However, the car turned out to be a huge success for VW: between 1964 and 1970, more than 30,000 vehicles were produced and delivered annually. 61% of these, or about 272,000 vehicles, were shipped to the United States alone. Although the car looks like a sports car, it was initially far from sports records with only 30 hp (22 kW) and a top speed of 118 km/h. This Karmann Ghia Lowlight is unique in several respects. In fact, it is one of probably only seven examples equipped with a Golde sunroof. And its first owner was none other than Manfred von Brauchitsch, who was already living in the GDR at the time. Brauchitsch was an official driver for Mercedes Benz from 1933 to 1939. In September 1953, he was accused in the FRG of high treason and endangering state security, spent eight months in prison, and fled to the GDR in 1954. There he served as president of the General Association of German Motorsport (ADMV) from 1957 to 1960 and president of the Society for the Promotion of Olympic Thought from 1960 to 1990. In this latter role, he mainly dealt with sponsorship for the Olympic teams of the GDR. He was awarded the Order of Patriotic Merit of the GDR three times and in 1988 received the "Olympic Order" from the IOC.
