The story

For sale: 1969 Volkswagen Super Bugger – The strangest VW Beetle camper ever modified Here’s a truly unique classic – the 1969 Volkswagen Super Bugger, perhaps the vehicle with the strangest name in automotive history. Although this quirky camper has not often appeared on the market, it has earned a special place in automotive literature, where it regularly appears in obscure automotive forums as a curiosity (and not without the right sense of humor). The Super Bugger was born in the early '70s when a small company in Costa Mesa, California, began offering turnkey conversions and kits for VW Beetles, creating these distinctive campers. Unfortunately, the company was only active for a short period and disappeared a few years later, leaving a rare legacy of these camper conversions. We know that people continued to build their own Super Buggers into the '80s and perhaps beyond. It is likely that today it would be illegal to make such a conversion in most jurisdictions due to increasingly stringent technical regulations for automotive modifications. However, Beetles converted during the original production period have no trouble renewing their registration. Due to the popularity and low price of the VW Type 2 bus, it’s hard to understand why the original designers of the Super Bugger chose to use the Beetle as a base for a camper conversion instead of the Type 2 – which had already been a popular choice for camper conversions for over 20 years. In any case, the designers of the Super Bugger managed to create a small and surprisingly capable highway-traveling camper that can accommodate two people. Despite adding only about 250 pounds to the weight of the Beetle, thanks to a lightweight wooden and plastic structure, it remains a truly functional vehicle. The design required significant modifications, with much of the original Beetle body removed, leaving only the front and the steel chassis. The camper section was then placed on top of it.
